The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.
Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.
Studies confirm that women who have
a doula present at their birth:
+ are 50% less likely to have a caesarean
+ find their labours are significantly shortened
+ have less need for medication
+ rate childbirth as less difficult and painful than do women not supported by a doula.
We are a collective of both DONA trained and certified birth and postpartum Doulas, body workers, massage therapists and childbirth educators. We offer support for families in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens.
It is listening…
Not judging, not telling your own story.
Support is not offering advice…
It is offering a handkerchief, a touch, a hug...caring.
We are here to help women discover what they are feeling…
Not to make their feelings go away.
We are here to discuss steps with a woman…
Not to take the steps for her.
We are here to help a woman discover her own strength…
Not to rescue her and leave her still vulnerable.
We are here to help a woman discover she can help herself…
Not to take the responsibility for her.
We are here to help a woman learn to choose…
Not to make it unnecessary for her to make difficult choices
